Sharing what we do; flavour and passion that respects nature

Our mission as a cooperative enterprise is to sustainably enhance the value of the milk our members produce by turning it into quality dairy products, thereby promoting the longevity of the farms and the vitality of the local territory for future generations. Claudine is a milk producer in Finistère. She talks passionately about her job and the work she does, to give people an insight into what her daily life entails and help them understand the source of all Laïta’s wholesome products - milk!

Opening the doors to share, convey and inspire vocations

I’ve been cow-mad since I was a little girl and a farmer since 2009, in the wonderful region of Abers in Brittany. I’m a member of GAEC (jointly-operated farms grouping) with my partner Sylvain and my brother-in-law Camille. We have 150 dairy cows on the farm and 150 hectares of cropland. Each year for the past ten years we’ve invited two classes from the local primary school, year 2 and year 3, to the farm. When the children arrive, we hand out pancakes made by Even and Paysan Breton from our lovely milk, then we hold workshops where they learn about how calves are born and reared, how we feed and milk our cows and what crops we grow. The children might well have a rural background but most of them have never seen a cow up close or drunk a glass of fresh milk! We show them the lovely things we make with passion and flavour. Then they go away in raptures and tell their parents about it. We’re really proud that we managed to inspire a vocation in one young person, who went on to study agriculture.

When sport and agriculture meet...

For the last five years we’ve been organising the ‘Ribines de l’Aber Ildut’, a race that attracts 600 runners from the Great West area. The route passes right through the cow stalls and milking shed! Some of the runners actually cry with joy because it reminds them of their childhood, for others it’s their first experience of farm life and they ask thought-provoking questions that prompt us to move forward. At the finish line, all the runners are given vegetables and pancakes as their reward! Initiatives like this are a way of communicating positively about what we do. I could never give it up because in my heart I want people to know where the food they eat comes from.
